Flea Pest Facts
In Australia and on the Sunshine Coast, we have several species of fleas. The most common is the cat flea which affects our pets and, if the flea colony becomes out of control, sometimes our own bodies.
It is the discomfort of a flea bite that often makes you aware of a possible infestation. Cat fleas nest in the host’s resting place, which is generally your cat or dog’s sleeping mat or basket. Other common flea species are the Dog and Bird Flea.
Without a microscope, it is almost impossible to tell the difference between cat and dog fleas. Both species feed off both cats and dogs and humans. Bird fleas live in bird nests and such and can multiply at an alarming rate in these environments.
Fleas are tiny, wingless insects with mouths adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas feed off the blood of humans and animals. Most flea bites on humans are on the lower legs and can become very itchy. Some people are more sensitive than others to flea bites and may suffer an allergic reaction.
Do I Need Flea Pest Control?
Although fleas are wingless, they have powerful legs that help them jump long-distances. These powerful jumps allow them to quickly move from one place to another- making the spread of fleas easy. Why do I have Fleas?
Barely visible to the eye, fleas are often difficult to spot. However, itching skin and rashes are often a tell-tale sign of an infestation. Fleas are often associated with household pets, there are several other ways they can find their way into your property.
Below are some of the reasons you may have a flea problem:
Household Pets: Infestations can occur when they hop off the host animal and onto surfaces as outdoor carpeting or furniture cushions.
If you don’t have pets, having friends who visit with their pets can result in them bringing along a supply of fleas.
Fleas may also come from neighbours’ pets who roam and spend time in and near your yard.
Rodents and other wildlife: Yet another source may be wildlife visiting your property, such as rats and mice.
If you find you have a rat or mouse problem, you may quickly find you have a flea infestation!
External Influences: While fleas prefer animal hosts, they will also bite humans and can be carried from place to place by humans. Ensure all second-hand products are clean and flea-free.
Think You’ve Got Fleas?
If you have moved into an unoccupied house and find you have fleas, it can be because fleas and their lava are often buried in carpets. Fleas can lay dormant for long periods of time and only require slight vibrations from you or your pet to wake them and have them attach and start to feed.

Know what to look for
Early detection and treatment are key to successful flea control. The biggest and most recognisable sign of a flea infestation is red, raised and itchy bumps on the skin.
Keep an eye out for these flea infestation signs:
Black Specs: If you find an increasing number of black specs lying around your home, you are looking at flea faecal matter. This is the most apparent sign of a flea problem.
Itching Pets: If you find your pets are constantly scratching, this may be a sign of a flea problem as well. Comb your pet’s fur with a flea comb. You may spot the occasional flea or irregular, black specs falling off their skin, which is flea faecal matter. It is comprised of undigested blood and will be visibly red, when on a surface.
Furniture: It is important to always check fabric furniture and carpets, as fleas will often hide and nest in these crevasses. These spaces are common places for fleas to breed and lay eggs.
