Common Household Pests

Need to know what is crawling around your kitchen? Or which creepy crawly has decided to make your home their own?

A wide variety of pests like termites, spiders, bed bugs and cockroaches can be found in homes and businesses throughout Australia. Our warm Sunshine Coast climate makes for the perfect environment for a wide range of pests to nest and feed. Some of the most common include:

Ants:

Ants are social insects that are mostly located in soil, wood or rocks. They live in colonies and are common intruders in and around buildings. Ants seek out walls, roofs, voids, kitchens, lawns and gardens and decaying wood. Once an Ant colony discovers a source of food, the number of ants in that area can increase exponentially as the workers get busy.

Most ants aren’t thought to carry diseases however, you don’t know where they’ve been foraging outside.

If you’ve seen white ants around your home, you might have termites!

Bed Bugs

Bedbugs are small, oval-shaped insects that live on the blood of humans or animals. They do not fly but they can move over floors, walls and ceilings very, very quickly. Bed Bugs are a nuisance and do not restrict their breeding activities or infestations to beds alone. They are found in carpets, house furniture and bedroom bedding, such as sheets, pillows and other linen.

Although they are stressful and a nuisance, bed bugs are not known to pose any serious health and safety risks, other than red and itchy bites.

Cockroaches:

Cockroaches are closely associated with the human environment and have become a worldwide pest. They like to nest anywhere that is dark and damp such as, near food preparation areas, in kitchen cupboards, under sinks, behind the fridge, in drains and with areas with easy access to food. No matter how clean your house, cockroaches will invade! Cockroaches are generally not seen during the daytime hours and like to forage under the cover of darkness. If you see a cockroach or two, there is a good chance that there are many more.

Cockroach management is important as they may pick up diseases from the filth in their surroundings and easily transmit them onto food and other surfaces.

Fleas:

Fleas are tiny, wingless insects with mouths adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas feed off the blood of humans and animals. Most flea bites on humans are on the lower legs and can become very itchy. Some people are more sensitive than others to flea bites and may suffer an allergic reaction.

Australia is home to several species of fleas. The most common is the cat flea which affects our pets and, if the colony becomes out of control, sometimes our own bodies.

It is the discomfort of a flea bite that often makes you aware of a possible infestation. Cat fleas nest in the host’s resting place, which is generally your cat or dog’s sleeping mat or basket.

Silverfish:

Known for their destructive feeding habits, silverfish are more than just an annoying pest. A single silverfish may not be cause for worry, however, they will have negative consequences in large numbers.

Small, brown-grey or silver in colour, silverfish are fast-moving and fast-breeding pests. They are capable of surviving in most climates but especially love dark, damp places like basements, kitchens, bathrooms, garages and sheds.

Paper and damp clothing are a favourite food for silverfish and you can almost always find them in any boxes you have stored in your shed or garage.

Spiders:

Spiders are predatory and come in all shapes and sizes, many of which keep pest species such as Cockroaches at bay. Unfortunately, many of us don’t appreciate the benefit they bring to our environment.

There are more than 35,000 species of spiders worldwide, with few thousand that can be found in Australia alone. Easily recognisable by their eight legs, many spiders don’t pose a serious health risk, however there are dangerous spiders to be wary of.

Think you have been bitten by a spider? Attempt to identify the spider and call the Poison Hotline immediately on 13 11 26.

Termites:

Known as the silent destroyer, Termite colonies are active day and night, feasting on anything made of wood. Termites are known to cause thousands of dollars in damages to your home and property and many Insurance policies will not cover damage caused by Termites. When feeding, termites eat from the inside out, leaving only a thin layer of wood and no structural integrity.

There are several types of termite species that can be found in Australia, namely dampwood, drywood and subterranean termites.

Wasps:

Despite the considerable number of species of wasps found in Australia, many are not considered to be pests. However, they can be a hazard in and around your home as they have the potential to attack in large numbers if their nest is disturbed.

Wasps typically build their nests outdoors under eaves and overhangs. If they are often found in your home, nests can also be found in the roof space, attic, cavity wall or ducts.

Tips For Pest and Termite Control

The first step in termite and pest prevention is to be alert. Most people are not aware they have termites and pests until it is too late!

Prevention is key to effective house pest control and management.

  • A thorough cleaning schedule is crucial for preventing future pest infestations
  • Many Pests are attracted to food and water; which means that all food waste needs to be disposed of properly.
  • Try to keep areas as dry as possible, and ensure that any leaking taps or pipes are fixed
  • Inadequate sanitation encourages infestations. Ensure your home is as clean as possible.
  • Vacuum carpets and clean linen regularly to ensure any breeding and nesting pests are eliminated.
  • Pests reproduce at an alarming rate and will often cause irreversible damage to your property.
